Homemade Paloma With Fresh Citrus and Topo Chico

When you think about tequila, what comes to mind? Is it Pee-wee’s Big Adventure where he infamously dances on top of a bar? (No, just me?) Perhaps there are flashbacks to your college days throwing back tequila shots in the finest of Chicago’s dive bars? Or maybe it’s the fish-bowl sized margaritas you ordered as a young professional during happy hour?

Tequila and I haven’t been around each other much since my twenties. Parents don’t get the day off to nurse a hangover; the kids will still wake up at 6:45am on a Saturday. However, there’s a drink I’d like to introduce you to that brings tequila back into your life in a more sophisticated way - the paloma.

When we lived in Louisville, KY, family friends of ours had a dog named Paloma. I thought it was the cutest name for a puppy, having no idea at the time that it was the name of a cocktail. Knowing what I do now, this just makes me love that family even more.

What is a paloma?

This cocktail is most commonly served on the rocks and made by mixing tequila, lime juice, and a grapefruit flavored soda. I like to make mine with fresh grapefruit juice, a squeeze of lime, and Topo Chico. For those not familiar with Topo Chico, it’s a sparkling mineral water made in Monterrey, Mexico. It’s delightfully light and fizzy, and it would make a good addition to the bar cart. I love sparkling water. Costco size cases of Perrier or Pelligrino, anyone?

When it comes to the brand of silver tequila, use what you have. I typically use equal parts silver tequila to grapefruit juice. That equates to about half of a grapefruit and 3/4 oz. of tequila - or 1 1/2 oz. of tequila if I’m feeling footloose. I also like to keep the pulp from the grapefruit in my cocktail, although you can easily leave it out. What I appreciate most about the paloma is that it's not only delicious but also easy to make. No fussing with simple syrups or cocktail shakers on this one.

As we ring in the weekend, why not pour yourself a refreshing cocktail and soak in the last of these summer nights? I don’t know about you, but a paloma, homemade guacamole, and plantain chips are calling my name. To get you in the spirit, why not play The Champs “Tequila” and do your best Pee-wee Herman moves. I’m sure no one is watching.

Have a wonderful weekend!
